In 1992 large numbers of pythons escaped from pet stores ravaged by Hurricane Andrew. Experts also believe that pet owners have released them into the wild once they grew too large. Since then their numbers have substantially increased to where there are thousands of pythons in the wilds of South Florida.

Since the death of a toddler strangled by a pet python, the Governor has decided that experienced herpetologists will be called upon to capture and properly euthanize these animals. So far fifteen permits have been issued and those who have actively used these permits will receive an extension. All that is required thus far is to be a resident of Florida, have a digital camera and a GPS system to mark the site where the python was found.

We here at A All Animal Control strongly believe that this is the perfect opportunity to start up a Nuisance Wildlife Control Center. Bats are beneficial creatures but when they reside in your home, the benefit to you is short lived.

Bats love to reside in attics and chimney's and will roost year round if temperatures allow it. The bad news is that bats will carry rabies, bat bugs and mites. They also can have histoplasmosis in their droppings. That is not exactly what you want to have in your attic!

How do you know if you have bats in your attic?

You may hear screeching, high pitched squeaks or squeals and maybe high pitched chatter. If you suspect you have bats, go out in the evening and do a "bat watch". With such a long and harsh winter in 2008, we are all glad to see the temperatures warm up and the green begin to emerge from a brown world.

Spring will also bring lots of wildlife invaders coming into homes and businesses. Squirrels will be nesting in attics, bats will migrate back in and roost in attics and chimneys too. New life emerges and nature reclaims her place once again.

We love spring and are busily going about our routes helping people solve wildlife conflicts. It is getting cold outside and animals need a place to hibernate or simply hole up when the temps fall below normal.

Most infestations can be easily solved. If the animals are left in the home or business for extended periods, it will be harder for you to remove them.

What can you do to ensure they won't invade your space?

Start from the ground and look for entry places such as where plumbing and electrical wires enter the home.

Look at your siding to ensure there are no missing pieces or holes in existing siding.

Observe connecting rooflines for security and any missing shingles, soffit or fascia.

Check the chimney for a cap and if there is one, make sure it is not damaged or ill fitting.

Check attic vents for security and proper screening in place.

Look for signs of digging under porches and patios indicating an animal is living there.

Check vents on the side of the home for proper operation and screening.

If you have a wildlife problem and need professional assistance, call the professionals at A All Animal Control

Mark E. Grab a pair of binoculars and look for missing vent screens, vent covers and gaps in rooflines. Inspect siding for holes and missing pieces.

Check the chimney for a chimney cap and any other vent stacks for proper screening. Now step back and look at the overall condition of the home or building. Are there any areas that need maintenance or repair?

If you suspect that animals are in your home or building, have a Wildlife Expert inspect and remove any wildlife before your repair work can be initiated. A All Animal Control are your local Nuisance Wildlife Control Experts and can solve any wildlife problem for you.

Mark E. With reduced fat reserves, their ability to survive winter hibernation dramatically is diminished. The bats have been noted hibernating closer to the cave entrance than normal. There have also been reports of bats flying in daylight, often in temperatures below freezing.

The current belief is the bats have elevated body temperatures that are causing them to move to the cooler part of the cave. With elevated temperatures, the body requires more energy and consumes the fat reserves, thus the bats are trying to find food in temperatures that do not support insect life. This flying further reduces the fat reserve and further exacerbates the problem.

Many of the bats collected showed signs of pneumonia and hemorrhaging in the lungs. The live bats found had body weights comparable to the weights bats should have when leaving the cave in the spring and will likely die before the end of winter.

Threat to Humans?
At this time we do not know if there is a health risk to humans, but the potential risks to humans are being assessed. Potential impacts on other wildlife species are not known.

Decontamination procedures and more information about this situation can be found at http://www.fws.gov/northeast/white_nose.html
Additional disease information provided by the USGS can be found at http://www.promedmail.org/pls/otn/f?p=2400:1001:::NO::F2400_P1001_BACK_PAGE,F2400_P1001_PUB_MAIL_ID:1000%2C71668
What to do if you find White Nose Syndrome
· Contact your local Department of Natural Resources bat biologist and inform them where you found the bats. Bats are probably by far one of the coolest animals we work with. It is not the bat itself that is often the coolest part of the job, but what you see when working with them. We were working on a very large church in Charleston, WV that had a fairly large bat problem.

This church was your normal building with a flat roof. We decided to do a little "stake out" to see where the bats were coming out. At dusk we situated ourselves on the roof and waited. We didn't have to wait long and the bats started zooming out of one particular part of the roofline.

After about 70 bats we stopped counting and just watched as they all dropped out of the roof. Bats cannot take off like a bird so they must drop and then spread their wings. The cool part of this job was inspecting the ceiling (there was no attic) and the areas behind the stage. There were huge speakers on both sides of the stage for the organ and years of stuff stored everywhere.

Being a Wildlife Pro affords you the opportunity to go where no one else is allowed to go. You pretty much have free reign of the project and the run of the place. We found another area above this stained glass window that the bats were entering. A tiny crack about the size of a mortar joint. That is all they needed! (Notice the guano on the window sill.) You will see all sorts of stuff in attics, crawlspaces, barns and outbuildings. You just never know what you will find. I just hope you don't find a mannequin dressed up like Cher like I did...it was sort of...hmm...creepy!

If you have a wildlife conflict in your home or building, give the professionals at A All Animal Control a call!

Mark E. That trend is not good for consumers or the community in which they live.

Using the power of the internet, these contractors advertise doing wildlife control work anywhere in the United States. But what they don’t tell you is that they are 5 states away and they are going to significantly jack up the price of their work!
Here is how this program works.

The company advertises that they have wildlife services or humane wildlife control services available nationwide. An 800 or 888 number is generally listed and you call the number and speak with an “expert” who will arrange to have a “technician” take care of you.

The “expert” then finds a local “trapper” to resolve your problem and of course adds a huge amount to your bill that you would not normally pay if you had hired a local Wildlife Control Expert. The “expert” has to jack up your bill because the “trapper” is sending him one and he is going to make a nice profit for basically taking a phone call.

Here is how to avoid dealing with these rip-off artists.

1. Ask the company if they are local or if you live near another state, are they close to you?

2. Ask them for a copy of their Nuisance Wildlife Management License and a copy of their insurance. If they send you a license that is out of state and it is not near you, this is a red flag. Ask them if they will be using a sub-contractor to do the work. Chances are they will be doing that. They have to as they cannot travel to you affordably.

3. If you suspect that you are working with a company who subcontracts out their wildlife work, you are risking any type of warranty claim you might have. For example, if you have your home repaired and animals re-enter your home, is the “trapper” responsible or the out of state “expert”? Why should the out of state “expert” care, he already has your money!

4. Look locally before you hire. If they have a local number, that is a great place to start. Ask friends for referrals. Visit this website for professionals across the country, Wildlife Professionals

5. Finally, check with your Secretary of State to see if the company is licensed to do business in your state. Most states require a business to be listed with the Secretary.

There is no reason you have to pay more for wildlife control services than you should. Paying a fair price is certainly reasonable, but paying an overly inflated price is never in the best interest of the consumer. The only person who benefits from that is the out of state “expert”.

Mark E. Wildlife control is a very specialized field that requires a lot of unique training. One simply does not buy a couple of cage traps and is qualified to provide wildlife control services.

A true professional will provide a very thorough inspection and recommend the proper procedures for wildlife removal. Don’t be fooled by operators that install a one way door and claim that this will remedy the situation entirely for you. One way doors are often a “feel good” approach to wildlife control.

The reality is that the animal is now homeless once it leaves the attic, crawlspace or porch and will have to find another place to live. The stress the animal is under when it discovers it cannot get back into its home is profound. Have you ever been locked out of your house or car? Then you know how stressful that is. What if it is raining or in the middle of winter? Where is that animal going to go?

When an animal is forced to find a new home it may have to fight for a new territory or move into someone else’s house. Now you have the problem in another house with the same animal.
With many companies offering the “feel good humane approach” it is easy to get confused as to what is best for the animal. A very well respected organization, the Audubon Society knows quite well that relocation is not the answer.

Wildlife management must offer a variety of solutions to completely control the damage and do what is best for the animal at the same time. To think there is a best outcome for every animal situation would be naïve.

Wildlife managers make the best decisions based on the information available to them. The interests of the property owner and the animal are included in their animal control programs. United wildlife control decisions need to be made by the property and building owner.

When you hire a Wildlife Control Agent or Nuisance Wildlife Control Professional, make sure they are properly licensed, insured and have been trained in the industry. If they do not have any or all of these requirements, do not expose yourself to the liability of hiring this company or individual.
For a list of Wildlife Experts in your area, visit A All Animal Control

Mark E. New subdivisions are moving into areas that were once farm land and forest. This expansion has reduced the natural habitat for many wild animals like raccoons, opossums, snakes, and even bats. Many of these animals have adapted to the urban lifestyle and now pose health risks to humans along with damage to the homes they invade. Controlling these wild pests is not a job for the average homeowner. It takes a professional to safely remove and exclude the problem animals and to safely clean up the unwanted and unsanitary mess they leave behind. The professionals at A All Animal Control are the experts in resolving wildlife issues in Charleston and the Teays Valley area.

Mark E. I hope not. Moles can make your lawn look like it went through the shredder!

When you see large mounds such as this, it means the moles are deep underground due to lack of rain. Moles travel with the nightcrawlers (worms). When the rain brings them to the surface the moles will also come to feed at the surface. But when the soil begins to dry out the moles will once again go deep after their favorite source of food.

Trapping is the best way to rid your yard of these pests. By trapping them you visually see the results of your control program at work.

A maintenance program is recommended as other moles will return from nearby properties. If you live near the woods you stand a better chance of getting moles in your lawn as moles are generally woodland creatures.

Once the moles are removed you can enjoy a beautiful lawn once again.

Mark E. These little guys here chose to live in an attic and entered through louvered vents.

The picture at the left shows an immature bat and if you look closely, you will see at the top a bat bug. This is a parasitic bug that lives on the bat itself. When you have bats in your home, often the bat bugs will occasionally move inside the home too. Bat bugs will bite you much like the bed bugs that are running rampant today.

When the young flightless pup was found in this home, we decided to wait until he could fly before they were evicted.

As you can see the bats on the right are enjoying themselves in this “cluster”. It is not uncommon to find bats in this configuration during the summer. This was a very minor bat infestation. When it is hundreds of them hanging on your louvers, that is when you have a major problem!

After these bats were evicted, the area was cleaned and sealed to prevent further entry.

Bats carry rabies and their droppings cause disease. They should not be allowed to live in a dwelling for these reasons alone. A professional will control this situation and return your home to a safe environment.

Mark E.
